Michael started his business in June 2008. Faced with a layoff and expenses greater than the compensation from the state, he decided to use his programming skills for him and his clients rather than another corporation that would take advantage of his time and family, dumping us like a day old salad, when they had the whim to do so.  He started in Georgia where we were living and worked our way back to our roots in Oregon. I only wish I had done this years ago, I am busier than ever but I  have control.

What keeps him hooked? He loves love the freedom from the corporate confinement.

Michael's story reads: Freedom is the key word, free to live on my own terms. My goals are now set on my scale rather than a boss who has never seen me. Now I have the ability and opportunity to make as much money as I like. My family can see me every day instead of between flights. Don’t get me wrong, working for yourself comes with its own set of problems and headaches but there’s nothing quite like knowing that you are in control.

Business Expose' RHBA Founding Members Est 2010 (Story written Dec 2016)

RHBA founding members, Linda Criss, RH Bank of the West, Branch Mgr; Toni Curry and Bev Snow-Kuehn, B-Line Enterprises came together to support the Raleigh Hills business community. The three ladies started talking, planning and envisioning what RHBA would look like; from a vision to reality, we officially launched in May of 2010. Building a local business community, shop local, know your business owners and your neighbors. Linda Criss was instrumental with all the legal matters, licenses, insurance, by-laws, the mission statement was a joint collaboration. Later the Board grew from three to four, adding Matt Chrisman, West Coast Bank RH Branch, Manager, then to five adding Diane Snedecor, Mountain Man Fruit & Nut Co. The two constants supporting RHBA are Michael Chase RHBA Webmaster, CF Chase Marketing, Robin Curtin RHBA Treasurer, Univera Associate and Joy Patterson former RHBA Secretary; PLUS the many RHBA business owners that continue to support the organization and we are now 76 members strong for the 2016-17 fiscal year. Toni Curry, with her new company, TLC Promotions, took the organization with a simple scrolly heart logo to a brand that is known and recognized. She used her graphic design background to the creation of a “real logo/a real brand” which included getting a grant from Venture Portland for boulevard banners which are proudly displaying the RHBA logo on B-H Hwy and streets in Raleigh Hills. Toni Curry and Linda Criss created position duties and put together an official RHBA policies and procedures manual. RHBA has had three Chairs in the six years since conception: Linda Criss, Bank of the West; Liz Utter, New Seasons Raleigh Hills and our current Chair Marie Morris, Beyond 18. Bev Snow-Kuehn and Diane Snedecor continue their outreach efforts and connecting the business community with our neighbors and encouraging new members to join RHBA.

RHBA successes are:
• Monthly business meeting at RH New Seasons
• Sign toppers “Raleigh Hills Business District”
• Member directory, December 2016 with 76 members
• Boulevard Banners
• Monthly presence in the Beaverton Resource Guide
• Annual holiday party in December
• Annual Shred / Recycle event during Earth Week in April

Mary Sherman - Sherman Family Properties (February 2017 Story)

The Sherman family has been part of the Raleigh Hills community for over 55 years.  Our father, Bill Sherman, along with mother Dianne, began our business first as an insurance agency and later their interest turned to real estate.  We are proud to carry on their tradition as Sherman Family Properties. We focus on local residential, retail and office properties with a few fun sunny get-aways in Palm Springs. Our passion is people, so we specialize in offering service and support to small business owners by caring for our tenants' experiences. We aim provide quality rental and leased space at a great value.

Our family business also donates countless hours to better our community through volunteer service and leadership. Some of our flagship projects are The Raleigh Park Garden Tour for beautification of public spaces and to connect our neighbors with one another, and an annual project filling 300 holiday stockings to benefit the local Sunshine Pantry, which provides food, amenities, housewares, and clothing to people in need within our community.

At home, our yard is a source for organic produce as well as a beautiful setting for garden tours and dinners for local non-profits. We like to think it also demonstrates how a small urban space can be an abundant food supply and how, by inviting our neighbors to use our wood oven and to visit the chickens, our garden can enrich our neighborhood. We also regularly host out of town guests interested in the urban farm, some through our Airbnb.

RHBA, in the neighborhood where we work and live, brings us in contact with other businesses and strengthens the success of our community and our tenants. We are grateful for the long legacy we have had in Raleigh Hills and look forward to building strong ties with local small business well into the future.

Outside of real estate, some of my favorite activities include hiking, bicycling, gardening and singing—recently on a hiking trip in the Lake District of England (the last train stop was at Windermere, which our company was named after).

“Selling a home can be difficult at the best of times, but Deanna made the whole process seem very easy. She was wonderful to work with, always very professional, very pleasant, and gave just the right advice to make things flow smoothly. I can’t imagine working with anyone else and highly recommend her to anyone who wants to buy or sell a house.”

- G. Dakin, Seller

“We described to Deanna the type of property we were looking for and without exception, each place she showed us met our specifications. Deanna was so knowledgeable and helpful and easy to talk to. At the end of a long day of looking at houses, Deanna suggested we go back to two of the places we were most interested in. That was a great idea, because it was at the second viewing that my husband and I truly fell in love with the place we ultimately made the offer on. We thought Deanna was helpful in the search process, but man did she shine when it came to the offer, inspection and negotiating for repairs part of the process. We felt like we truly had someone amazing in our corner, which we needed because we were pretty new to this. My husband and I had such a positive experience with Deanna and are incredibly thankful that we found her. We couldn’t recommend her more.”

- M. Parton & D. Brown, Buyer
